Ironically, many people who want their website to be in the front pages of the search engines are unaware of the importance of the domain name of their website. Which is why it is no surprise that SEO experts spend a lot of time convincing their clients why one domain name is better than others.

So why don’t your save yourself some time and find a domain name that is SEO friendly, before consulting an SEO expert? Here are a few tips that can help you in that.

• Age of the domain
If you are familiar with Google’s sandbox that filters every new website from reaching the front pages, you’d know that a new domain name will remain away from the visibility span of visitors at least for some time. This means that if the domain is older you have better chance of being ranked by the search engines.

• Exact keyword name
If your main keyword is “rent conference room”, no other domain name would be better than “rentconferenceroom.com”. If the domain name and your keyword are one and the same there are more chances for your site than a website with the same keyword but different domain name like rent-conference-room.com. And, if you cannot get exact keyword you could at least get a keyword-rich name like the hyphenated one given here. Something is better than nothing, after all.

• Domain names with .com

If you are selling cars, it’s better if you have cars.com in your domain name as people are expected to search with this address for any information on cars. However, it is most likely that serious car buyers already have set a model in mind and go straight to Toyota.com or generalmotors.com for their search. For this reason, good domain names must have a link to your product or brand name.

Length of name

Any name, more or less 67 characters, is allowed. However, good domain names are never too short because then they reveal no connection to products. For example abp.com is a pretty obscure name considering you mean is AcmeBeautyProducts.com. Short names are also less vulnerable to typing errors. But in cases like that of Acme Beauty Products Company when abp.com has no relation to the company’s products (lipstick and eye shades), it is better to keep the name longer and self-explanatory

COM, ORG, NET

Websites that sell products at local level, like pizza delivery franchises, can opt for something other than .com like (.net, nu, .sg, etc.). If you own a bigger business that has the power to cater to international audience then .net and .org are good domain names.

Choosing a domain name for your website may be a little overwhelming for persons now venturing into the online game, so here are a few points to consider when confronted with this dilemma.

1. The Name. Domain names can be of any length up to 67 characters, but try to keep the name short and simple so that people can remember it and type it into the browser address bar with ease. Try using the name of your business so that people can identify with it. If your domain name is your business’ name, people will automatically know where to go. For example, when people think of Best Buy, they don’t have to wonder what URL to type into their browser to get there. The name of the business is also the URL.

2. The Domain Extension – Dot What? There are many different extensions available to choose from. I recommend the .com extension as the first choice for businesses since it is the most popular and people tend to remember that more readily. If your budget is not too tight, it is recommended that you also acquire the .net, .info, .org, .mobi and your country’s top level domain (.gy for Guyana) to protect your brand. The .mobi extension will come in handy when you decide to develop a mobile version of your website for mobile users.

3. Character Type. Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and hyphens (dashes). Spaces and symbols are not allowed, and domain names are not case sensitive. I warn against hyphenated names since people tend to forget the hyphens, and may end up at your competitor’s website. When the non-hyphenated domain name for your business is not available, you may however be forced to acquire the hyphenated version just to get the domain name you want.

4. Register Your Domain NOW. You may just be starting you business now and did not budget for a website, but you can register your domain now and develop the website at a later stage. Domain names are being snatched up like hot cakes, so delaying this task may leave you with “the-domain-name-that-no-one-wanted.net”. Just get out there and register before you loose the opportunity to get the name you really want, or be forced to pay a premium price after it’s taken, or try to retrofit your domain name to your business.
